HOW TO CONNECT A POWER AMP

TO AN AV RECEIVER

If you're new to the audio game, connecting a power amp to an AV receiver can be confusing.  Let’s take a closer look at the steps you will need to follow to begin connecting a power amp to an AV receiver.

Find the power source for all pieces of equipment

If you already have your equipment plugged in, then it is easy to find its power source. But if not, then planning out how you will plug these items into a power outlet can be helpful.

Purchase all the necessary equipment

To connect a power amp to an AV receiver, you will need a speaker wire and associated RCA cable in addition to the speakers themselves.

Run a trigger wire from the Power Amp to the AV Receiver

If you would like to be able to turn on the power amp and the AV receiver simultaneously, then you can run a trigger wire from the power amp to the AV receiver.

Connect the AV receiver's pre-out to a power amplifier.

Us an RCA cable to connect the AV receiver’s pre-out to the power amplifier’s jack with respect to the speaker you are attempting to connect.

Establish an unbalanced connection

Some power amps have the unbalanced connection labeled near the jack that you will be plugging an RCA cable into, but others require flipping a small switch to establish whether or not it's balanced.

Use a speaker wire to connect the power amp with the speaker

Locate the speaker wire and plug it into the speaker. Then, on the other end of the wire, take these positive and negative connections and plug them into the power amp.
